OCEAN Grove has recorded an emphatic win over Anglesea to move into the Bellarine Football League top five and keep its finals chances alive. It was a season-defining match for both teams and the game certainly lived up to expectations, with a tight contest throughout and both teams attacking hard at the ball. Grubbers coach Cam McGregor was elated with his side's victory. "Super win in the end. Anglesea are a great side so we had to fight it out all the way, but in the end we got the four points and that's all we were looking for," McGregor said. The 'Seas jumped out of the blocks early with Sebastian Kent scoring the opening goal, however Travis Gavin answered back with a quick reply for Ocean Grove and the game was set at a high standard early. The Grubbers had the chance to create a buffer in the first quarter but were inaccurate and at the first break it was three goals apiece, with the Grubbers' five extra behinds separating the two in a tight game. Anglesea once again burst out of the packs early and when Tyron Norman kicked a nice goal for the Roos it set the tone for the game as one which would be close all day. Kent followed up his first effort with an even better volley goal in the square and after Luke Norton took a strong mark up forward and converted, it looked like Anglesea may capitalise on the Grubbers' first term misses. Yet it was Travis Gavin who responded for Ocean Grove and broke the run of behinds, and soon after Wayde Piec and Bernie Lynch also goaled to give the Grubbers a 13-point lead at the long break. It really should have been more, though, with Ocean Grove having 19 scoring shots to Anglesea's 11. Anglesea kicked the first two goals of the third quarter and drew within two points before Dave Gray kicked a beauty from outside 50 on the boundary line and injected some confidence into the Ocean Grove side. The Grubbers continued to repel the Anglesea attacks, yet the margin was just five points at the final break. With back and forth goals in the final quarter neither side could gain any sort of momentum, and with just minutes to go Anglesea employed a flooding tactic to try and stop the Grubbers from mounting an unassailable lead. But it was James McTaggart's goal that sealed the game for Ocean Grove in the final minutes and the Grubbers walked away with an eight-point win.
