QUEENSCLIFF forward Ed Grout continued his impressive development with a starring role in the Coutas' 67-point win over Anglesea on Saturday.
The teenager kicked three goals to take his season tally to 41 and also took multiple overhead marks inside the Coutas' forward 50 as they consolidated their spot in the top three. Queenscliff coach Heath Jamieson is pleased with Grout's progress this season.
"He's a big asset," Jamieson said. "We forget his age sometimes. He's still only 19 years (old) and he probably took even a few more marks today that probably weren't paid. "He's a very good player." The Coutas had a host of goalkickers in the match, yet inaccuracy and a lack of talk inside their forward 50 stopped the final margin from being even bigger. "We wasted a few opportunities," Jamieson said. "We had a few big fellas up forward who were crashing into each other, but I thought we were pretty good." In a very physical game, the Coutas received a blow when they lost star player Daniel Gibbs to injury early in the first quarter. "(The injury to Gibbs) hurt our rotation a bit too, so that (winning) was another pleasing aspect," Jamieson said. "(Overall) there were a few cuts and bruises, but that's the way we go about it." With Portarlington suffering a 157-point annihilation at the hands of Drysdale, the Coutas will be looking to their upcoming clash with the Demons as a chance to cement their position. "It's all about us building a base now to play finals footy and we want to attack every game like it's our last," Jamieson said. "We had a good win against Barwon Heads and against the lower teams we probably gave them a bit of a touch-up, so were looking at playing the way we want to play for the rest of the year." Jamieson also explained heading into their second straight finals campaign, there's an air of excitment surrounding the seaside club. "Everyone's doing the right thing. We've got blokes putting pressure on for senior spots now," he said. "People thought we were having a down period, but we were actually training really hard which is why we were a bit flat on weekends. Now that we've got our fitness to where we want it, training's a little bit lighter and I think it showed how red-hot we are at the moment."
