LARA has wrestled its way back into the GFL's top five with an inspiring come-from-behind seven-point victory over St Mary's yesterday.
In front of a huge crowd at Kardinia Park West, Lara outclassed the Saints with their unmatched will to win and determination, running out 16.14 (110) to 16.7 (103) winners to lift it to fourth spot on the ladder. With six rounds left in the home-and-away season, Lara is one game clear of Leopold and St Josephs who sit in fifth and sixth positions respectively.
After overcoming South Barwon a fortnight ago and St Mary's yesterday, Lara coach Ben Harris said that his players were high on confidence with a potential top-three spot up for grabs. "People can't keep on saying that we have beaten nobody now, we have beaten two genuine contenders in the last two weeks," a delighted Harris said after the match. "We have got an opportunity to get the double chance, but at the end of the day there is still six games to go." Trailing by 27 points at half-time, Harris said that he was proud of the way his side had been able to play as a team to run over the top of the Saints in the second half. In his first game back since breaking his arm during the interleague clash in May, Harris strained his hamstring midway through the second term leaving the Cats with only three fit players on the bench for the second half. With precise ball movement thanks to David Ibister and Kane Smith through the middle, the Cats willed themselves back into the contest heading into the final term with Ibister taking one of the best marks seen in GFL footy in years. Lara continued their momentum into the final term with early goals to Josh Smith and James Turnbull to stun the crowd at Kardinia Park West. |
